Located near the ancient imperial capital of Luoyang, in Henan Province (China), we find the historic Buddhist Longmen caves. Formed in 2345 excavated caves and niches carved into the stone cliffs, they surround the river Luo. Throughout the history of ancient China, the place was known as Yiquan, or “clock tower in the Yi,” a reference to the old observation posts located on the cliffs above the river, then known as Yi.
This site was built and worked by Buddhist artists who carved through the rocks that were on the cliff were shaping religious figures, which were distributed by various caves.
This site was created when the Northern Wei Dynasty moved from Datong to Louyang, beginning in the year 473 AD. In the caves that comprise it, the oldest is Binyang, which dates back to early Northern Wei Dynasty. Another point of attraction for tourists is the Cave of Ten Thousand Buddhas, surrounded by stone giants.
The most important and impressive work of the course is found in the Cave of ancestor worship. In this cave, the giants are surrounding and protecting a leading figure, which refers to Buddha.
